PROGRAM SUMMARY:
In grateful appreciation of David I. Rosenstein's dedication to the HIV
community and his instrumental work in spearheading the transition of the
APHA's HIV/AIDS Special Primary Interest Group to a fully recognized
section, the HIV/AIDS Section honors his contributions by offering a $250.00
grant award. In keeping a focus on the section's integrity and ultimate
purpose by recognizing the unique contributions of the HIV community on our
work and on our lives, the section offers the David I. Rosenstein
scholarship to someone living with HIV who is vested in the public health
field.
The APHA HIV/AIDS section provides a professional base for members of
diverse disciplines to combine talents and interests to help in the struggle
with the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and it provides leadership to members on
HIV/AIDS issues and needs. Underscoring APHA's mission of bringing together
a multidisciplinary body of professionals "to support an environment of
professional exchange, study, and action," the HIV/AIDS Section seeks to
attract new members; to acknowledge consumer involvement; and, to recognize
excellence in service by qualified applicants.
Judging Process:
Each year, the Section's Scholarship Committee recognizes the significant
contributions of individuals with HIV in one or more of the following
arenas: service, research, consumer movements, and policy. Individuals may
apply for themselves or nominate another.
For nominating another, consider anyone with HIV who has provided a valuable
service to the HIV Community. Think about how colleagues, employees,
co-workers, clients, advisory board members, research assistants, students,
and patients have impacted our systems of care, education, policy, and
research.
CriteriA:
* Personal investment in HIV-related research and service
* History of volunteer or paid work in HIV-related fields
* Dedication and commitment to continuing work in HIV-related arenas
AWARDS:
The award recipient is recognized with an APHA Certificate (suitable for
framing and display). Additionally, the selected award recipient will
receive a cash payment of $250.00 in the form of Conference Registration
Fees to offset the expense of attending the APHA Annual Meeting
APPLICATION PROCEDURES:
The application process is simple and designed to attract as many qualified
applicants as possible. A completed application includes:
* Current resume or list of achievements/affiliations
* Two written references highlighting contributions to HIV-related fields
* A one-page essay answering the question, "How will the scholarship
applicant use the information learned at the APHA annual conference?"
The Scholarship Committee will insure confidentiality concerning an
applicant's HIV status when calling references. The Scholarship Committee
will acknowledge that the applicant has been nominated for the David I.
Rosenstein Scholarship for attendance to the APHA annual conference.
